Starting Bulk Shea Butter Extraction and Refinery Business

Yes, you read it right! Shea Butter Extraction/Refinery business is another goldmine that is yet untapped. Only a few numbers of international and local organizations in Africa are players in this market. Though, the government in some African countries have also entered this market but still the market remains fully untapped. Shea Butter Production on it’s own is a goldmine as Shea Butter will continue to remain one of the foremost ingredients used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and confectionery industries.

Today, the global shea market represents an estimated value of $2.75 billion, which is set to double within the next ten years to exceed $5.5 billion by 2033. Africa produces approximately 1,760,000 metric tons (MT) of raw shea nuts a year, and historically, most of this stayed within the African continent to supply domestic demand. The shea export market traditionally traded raw shea kernels rather than shea butter or other finished products.

The shea tree is scattered across Africa naturally. You can find the tree in the wild Savannah belt of West Africa, from Senegal in the west to Sudan in the east. In West African there are seven predominantly known countries bestowed naturally with the Shea Tree. Examples are: Ghana, Burkina Faso, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Mali and Togo and this opportunity is also extended to some other countries across African continent like: Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda, Zaire, Guinea and The Gambia.

The truth is Rural-based women, using manual traditional methods, process about 60% of all the crude butter produced in West Africa at a relatively low extraction rate of about 20-24%. While the Semi Mechanized Processors have an extraction rate of within 25 – 35% depending on the type of machinery deployed and at which stage of production they were deployed. The fully Mechanized method extraction rate yields within 36-50% shea butter.

Shea Butter Extraction is the process of removing Oil from the Shea Kernel. If you need to know more about Shea Nut and Shea Butter Production, you can use our contact information below to contact us. Therefore, starting a Shea Butter Extraction business using a fully Mechanized method will reduce under-production in the Shea Butter Extraction Procedures and increase profitability. Also, you will be able to ensure good quality control under the Good Manufacturing Practice procedures.

This also create traceability of productions as each batch of production will be well accounted and recorded. You can start this project on a medium scale/large scale basis. Your Shea Products can be sold both locally and Internationally. There are lots of factors to consider when determining the cost involved in setting up a Shea Butter Extraction Business, on Medium Scale, cost can vary within usd200k to usd1m. For Large scale, you can be spending between usd1m-usd6m. If you need to know the actual cost you will need to set this up, you can contact us, with our contact information below.

To take the business another step further, you can start Refining of Bulk Shea Butter in order to produce Shea Stearin and Shea Olein. These products are highly profitable as it generates high demand across the globe.

Shea stearin is often used as an alternative to cocoa butter when making chocolates and other creamy confections like ice creams, sauces, and spreads while Shea olein, is used extensively in cosmetic formulations as an effective emollient and a rich source of antioxidants. Shea olein is used in personal care products formulated for both skin and hair because it nourishes, moisturizes, repairs, and protects from damage.

After the extraction of the bulk shea butter, there are various options for Refining. Every stage of Refining takes natural ingredients, usually deemed unfit for human consumption, out of the Butter. The process then introduces harmful refining chemicals as catalysts, which have to be removed at the end of the process by “re-refining”. The four major processes for modifying or cleaning crude shea butter are: De-gumming, Neutralization, Bleaching, and Deodorization.

Shea Butter Fractionation
Shea butter has two main components – the stearin (the creamy fat) and the olein (the runny oil). The production of cosmetics mainly uses olein, while the stearin goes into margarines and chocolates. The process which separates the two components is “fractionation”. There are two methods of fractionation, we have the chemical/mechanical method and physical method.

The Chemical/Mechanical method requires the creation of a vacuum (airless condition) and applies a chemical reagent to separate the olein from the stearin at different temperatures. After separation, the oily part can then be poured out through decantation or siphoning.

The physical process involves a process of sedimentation or a centrifugal method to cause the stearin to separate from the olein. This process, however, proves more difficult when working with the West African shea butter because of the higher ratio of stearin to olein.
